Working at New Hall

New Hall offers an inspiring and supportive working environment within a stunning Grade I listed building, the former Tudor palace of Beaulieu. Set on a 140-acre estate, the school provides state-of-the-art facilities, including:

  • Newly refurbished staff rooms and on-site accommodation options
  • A dedicated staff lounge and hospitality facilities, including the Denford Bar & Lounge
  • Extensive sports facilities, many of which are floodlit: 8 netball courts, 2 all-weather hockey pitches, 6 rugby pitches & a 3G rugby training pitch, athletics track, 12 golf practice bays & launch monitor, 5 cricket wickets, indoor & outdoor cricket nets, 25m 6-lane indoor pool, 10 tennis courts, sports hall and fitness suite
  • Access to outdoor learning areas
  • An ambitious School Development Plan with continued investment in staff facilities

As a boarding school, New Hall is a vibrant and dynamic workplace. Staff enjoy being part of a close-knit community, where professional and personal development opportunities abound. With a new railway station opening at the School’s entrance in 2025, New Hall will be even more accessible, with direct connections to London Stratford (26 minutes) and London Liverpool Street (34 minutes).

Recent Staff Reviews

Middle Leader

Having taught at New Hall for many years, in two stretches, I chose to return here for promotion (several staff, like me, are people who moved elsewhere and later returned to work at New Hall).

The School has a generous CPD budget, which is exceptional in including full or part funding for degrees, diplomas, MA/MPhil qualifications, PGCEs, DELF/DELE modern languages courses, finance qualifications (CIPP, CIMA, ACCA, AAT), HR qualifications (CIPD), music lessons and even driving lessons! The School has apprenticeships schemes (Early Years, Chaplaincy, horticulture). New Hall has taken a lead in training teachers, investing £250k in training teachers over a 5-year period. The School has a record number of staff who have gone on to Headship/Deputy Headship (15 in recent years).

Many staff recommend roles to friends and family, and several couples have even met and married at New Hall! Recently, three generations of one family worked at New Hall, as support staff. The School employs a high number of Old Fishes (alumni), with typically 10-15 on the staff each year. Several former staff have become Governors of the School, Directors of New Hall’s Multi Academy Trust or volunteers with the New Hall Voluntary Service (NHVS); they have been keen to continue their relationship with the School and to give back to the community as a volunteer. New Hall is a wonderful place to work where all ideas are welcome. I am very happy here and plan to be here for many years to come.

Head of Department

I have been fortunate to work at New Hall School for fifteen years and have held a number of different roles during this time. Initially joining as a teacher, I was soon promoted to Second in Department and Director of Vertical Houses, giving me the opportunity to learn leadership skills early in my career. I have always been encouraged in my academic and professional ambitions and was promoted to the role of Head of Department in 2017 while on maternity leave. Supporting the continuous professional development of staff is a priority at New Hall and I was strongly supported by SLT in my desire to become a leading mentor of PGCE teachers and ECTs, resulting in me completing a Post Graduate Diploma in Mentoring. Reflecting on and improving learning and teaching to maintain high standards of academic excellence and enable all students to achieve their potential is a priority at all levels and we have regular INSET sessions and literature to support teachers to develop their practice and be outstanding. There is an open and supportive culture, and we regularly observe each other, collaborate on projects and share ideas. The achievements of staff and students are regularly highlighted and celebrated.
