The Learning Development Department supports students who have specific learning difficulties. At Key Stage 3, students are withdrawn from one of their curriculum subjects so they can attend literacy/numeracy lessons tailored specifically to their needs. Classes are small, so students can be assured of receiving individual attention, delivered by qualified teachers. In addition, students will often have the benefit of in-class support from New Hall’s highly experienced team of learning support assistants.
At Key Stage 4, students can still access help to improve their literacy/numeracy skills. However, the emphasis is on supporting their studies generally, so sessions will include mentoring advice on organisational and study skills, as well as help with any specific subject areas the students find difficult.
The Learning Development Department also provides support via its daily lunchtime study clubs and after-school study clubs on four evenings a week. These provide a friendly, informal but quiet environment, in which students can complete homework, secure in the knowledge that if there is anything they do not understand about their work, help will be at hand.
