Greece 2022

Date Posted: Friday 28 October 2022

At the beginning of October half-term, the Classics and Drama Departments organised a trip to Greece for students in Years 10-13. During the visit, they learned about ancient Greece and Greek theatre. The group also visited the most important ancient sites and enjoyed eating traditional Greek food. Highlights of the trip included the temple of Poseidon, Acropolis, the Theatre of Dionysus, National Archaeological Museum, oracle of Delphi and the ancient city of Mycenae. Students had an opportunity to perform at the ancient theatre of Epidavros, watch the plays “Make Love, Not War” and “Antigone”, and even create their own Greek-inspired theatre masks. Read their impressions below:

“The trip was an incredible opportunity to visit Greece and experience the power of antiquity. As a Year 13 student, this trip to such legendary sites has sparked my interest in exploring the world of ancient Greece and theatre further. Thank you both Classics and Drama Departments for organising such an amazing trip!” – Barbara (Year 13)

“What really stood out to me about this trip was how enthusiastic all of the staff members involved were, and how much effort they put into ensuring that we had as much freedom as possible and could really enjoy our time there to the fullest.” – Iya (Year 10)

“One of my favourite moments was being able to perform at the ancient theatre of Epidavros. I really enjoyed this as I was able to have fun but also learn about the different types of theatre.”- Sam (Year 10)

“My favourite things were the Acropolis, because it was so beautiful and interesting, and the mask workshop, because everyone looked funny with their masks on. I also really enjoyed the ancient comedy that we watched.” – Scarlett (Year 10)

“The plunge into classical culture was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. To visit the sites referenced in the texts we translate and to walk in the shoes of classical celebrities such as Socrates or Pericles brought a new light and love for the subject. Handling passages containing some of the places we visited feels like being transported back. To anyone considering going on School trips, I would not only recommend it but also advise you that you would be missing the opportunity of a lifetime if you chose not to go.” – Jake (Year 13)
