District Sports Winners!
Following the success of the field events, New Hall track athletes returned to Melbourne Stadium on Friday 25 June. Our athletes were split into teams of 4 from Years 3 - 6 who had to run in a sprint race against children in their age group. It was a great experience for some of the younger pupils with strong runs by Lara Clark, Elizabeth Murphy, Saskia Walmsley, Holly Haslam, and Megan Cotton. The boys’ teams consisted of Toby Warren, Tom Spilsbury, Tom Durkan, Jonathan Murphy and Gregory Oxlade. The following finished in the top 2 in their races: Alexander Acheson, Grace Carroll, Tara Durkan, Samuel Makins, Carlos Pajares and Aaron Stone. Evangeline Moir-Smith and Chloe O’Hare both won their races. In the relays, the scores for the track events were very close. A winning Year 6 girls’ relay and a 2nd place in the boys’ relay team helped to add to the team total. Following a nervous wait, the New Hall team were again winners in the overall team competition (combining the track and field events). This is an excellent result, and reflects the hard work the children have put in over the term in athletics.
On Monday 21 June, New Hall athletes competed in the first section of the district sports, at Melbourne Athletics Stadium.
Following some good preparation, Sophie Thomson and Felix Fardell both performed extremely well in the long jump. Felix jumped consistently over 3.5 meters enough to win overall.
Samuel Spilsbury and Ruby-Mae Wellman both threw well against some tough opposition, with Ruby winning her event.
In the high jump, Alexander Acheson and Evangeline Moir-Smith enjoyed successful jumps, with Evangeline finishing as winner and Alexander finishing in 3rd place.
The team points for these 'field' events will be added to the track events for an overall placing.

The girls’ team consisted of Grace Carroll, Aisling Dinan, Anya Dziewulski and Sophie Thomson. The girls lost some very close matches but were unable to convert any of their impressive play into wins.
Cricket
On Friday 11 June New Hall played again The Perse School in the last cricket match of the year. New Hall started well with opening bowlers of Felix Fardell and Samuel Jones each taking a wicket in the first 4 overs of the game. Perse had 2 strong batsmen who stayed at the crease for a while, but due to the accuracy and speed of bowling from Kavin Kugan and James Berry they were unable to increase the score significantly.
The turning point of the game came when Grant Beard took an amazing catch one handed when fielding at gully position. After this, a succession of wickets came, with Toby Scott and Grant Beard both bowling well. Some good stops by wicket keeper Gregory Oxlade, Alex Acheson and Ben Coxon kept the Perse total down to 60 runs.
In response New Hall required 3 runs an over and made a positive start. Grant hit some good, straight shots down the off side. As the game continued, Harry Morgan supported James Berry for a while before being dismissed. After 10 overs, New Hall were comfortably on the way to making the total, and this was achieved well by James Berry and Toby Scott who were able to score freely.
The victory was well deserved by the New Hall boys who won by 5 wickets - achieving 61 runs with 7 overs still remaining. Well done to the team, a good performance by all the players contributed to this win.
Tennis
New Hall v Elm Green – won 6-4
New Hall played Elm Green this week in the annual tennis fixture. It was a highly competitive match with some great tennis being played by both teams. The New Hall team got off to a good start with Gregory Oxlade (5F), Toby Scott (6R) and Kavin Kugan (6H) all winning their singles matches. James Berry (6R) battled hard but was narrowly defeated in a tight match. The girls team consisted of Bryony Harding (6A), Sophie Thomson (6A), Emily Brignell (5D) and Ruby-Mae Wellman (6A). The girls played doubles and although there were some encouraging shots they unfortunately lost both of their matches. The final round of games was mixed doubles; New Hall played well and managed to win 3 out of the 4 games which resulted in an overall win to New Hall 6-4.
Rounders
On Monday 7 June the Year 6 Rounders team competed in the first ever tournament hosted by St Faith’s School in Cambridge against 5 other schools. The first game, against The Perse School, got off to a nervous start, with the opposition scoring 71/2 and New Hall 21/2. The second game against St Faith’s produced an equally disappointing result of 9-31/2, with only Anya Dziewulski scoring a rounder. However, settling down well in the third match, Evie Moir-Smith scored a rounder on the second ball and the team proceeded to step up their game. Georgia Tinson and Anya scored 2 rounders each and the game ended with a glorious win of 81/2-4. The fourth match against St John’s was very exciting. Grace Carroll had a hat trick, getting 3 people out with 3 catches in a row. Then Evie had a hat trick scoring 3 rounders. This excellent play helped the team achieve another win of 7-6. The final game was a walk over, with continued steady bowling from the Captain Chloe Thurgood, and a final win of 11-5. New Hall came third overall, with terrific progress throughout the afternoon.

U8 v St Margaret’s Results
New Hall won 254-228
On Monday 24 May, the Year 3 team played in their first ever cricket match against St Margaret’s at home. New Hall were first to bat and, after an opening that saw them lose three early wickets, the batting settled and the home side posted a credible score of 254. There were good shots played by Aaron Stone, Matthew Cook and John Barber that helped to increase the run rate. In response St Margaret’s were unable to match the New Hall score, falling short with a total of 228. The bowling was generally tight, giving St Margaret’s less opportunity to find gaps in the field, leaving New Hall victorious by some 26 runs. Well done to the team for a fantastic first performance. Thank you to all of those that came along and supported the team and those that helped to pack away the tea.

U12 20/20 Cricket Festival for the Joe Hussain Trophy
The inaugural Joe Hussain Trophy U12 Cricket Festival took place at New Hall on Saturday 22 May.
The trophy is in commemoration of the late Joe Hussain and his fantastic efforts to promote youth cricket. New Hall’s Head of Cricket, Mr Gareth James, was coached by Mr Hussain and together with his son, Nasser Hussain, former England Cricketer and New Hall Cricket Professional they aim to make this festival a New Hall tradition.
The School’s immaculate grounds together with the beautiful sunshine provided a perfect setting for New Hall School, Holmwood House Preparatory School, King Edward VI Grammar School and Felsted Preparatory School to compete for the Joe Hussain Trophy. There was a typical 20/20 Festival atmosphere at the School with music being played for wickets and boundaries, player’s marquees and even a Pimms tent quirkily decorated by parents of the school.
The morning games saw a strong Holmwood House team race to 137 off their 20 overs, with good batting contributions from Harrington and Holland. Felsted struggled in return after a good start with the ball from Holmwood taking wickets consistently in the first 5 overs leaving Felsted 46 all out.
It was a similar story in the other fixture with a disciplined KEGS’ bowling side taking early New Hall wickets. A strong partnership from Baird and Smith in the middle of the innings gave New Hall a glimpse of hope. New Hall started well with Treacher going for just 7 off his allotted 4 overs, receiving good support from Gibson and Berry. Unfortunately New Hall’s total of 70 was not enough as KEGS advanced to the final, with 5 overs to spare.
Felsted then played New Hall in the plate final, which was a much tighter affair. Felsted started well, and every time New Hall created pressure they seemed to find the boundary as the game swung back and forth, New Hall failed to reach the 117 that was set to win.
The cup final was also a well matched game, Holmwood batted first and again they impressed with the bat, with Player of the Tournament Harrington contributing once again. KEGS’ bowlers contended well and were backed up by some outstanding fielding. Patel and Trowell gave a good performance with the bat and ball and led KEGS in return. As they reached the final over, the tension around the ground was growing, Nasser Hussain along with the rest of the crowd watched on as Holmwood managed to defend 12 from the final over.
The day was a great success, with some high quality cricket being played and there were smiles all around as the boys received their trophies from arguably the most influential England cricket captain ever. Nasser commented “It was a real honour for the trophy to be named after my father; he would have been delighted to see so many talented, young cricketers out competing for their school team”
Nasser Hussain started as a Cricket Professional at New Hall in January and together with Mr James the Head of Cricket they are striving to develop the cricket at New Hall. The academy is doing fantastically well, there are exceptional facilities at the School, lots of exciting upcoming cricket tournaments and an international tour. Together they aim to help players progress to county and national level and for New Hall to become one of the leading cricket teams in the country.
The superb Pimms Tent!

U9 v St Margaret’s Results
New Hall lost 82-96
In the first innings, Jamie Norman elected to field. With a long wicket, it proved to be a good challenge of the players’ bowling skills who coped well. The New Hall team fielded well and tried hard to limit the scoring of the opposition, making some good stops. In response to the opposition’s total of 96 runs, New Hall played well, with improved running between the wickets. Towards the end of the innings, Charlie Young and Tom Durkan played some good shots giving a score of 82 runs, just short of the opposition total.
Years 4&6 v Elm Green Results
New Hall won scoring a total of 83 runs
New Hall was first in to bat, and Harry Phelps and Grant Beard both played some controlled and well positioned shots. Grant hit three consecutive boundaries, reaching a total of 16 before being retired to allow other batsman an opportunity. From the next batsmen to the crease, Harrison Ellis and Harry Morgan combined well to keep the scoreboard ticking over. After Harrison was bowled out, Jonathan Murphy came to the crease, and was eager to run and score. A couple of lovely straight drives gave New Hall a team total of 83 runs.
In preparation for the Elm Green response, captain Kavin Kugan set out an attacking field setting. Gregory Oxlade and Kieran Drew opened the bowling, with both showing a big improvement since the previous game. Gregory bowled with increased speed, but with greater control, and Kieran took an important early wicket. At the next bowling change, Toby Scott and Kavin entered the attack, and made it very difficult for the opposition with some excellent and accurate bowling. Assisted by some excellent fielding, with George Shield attempting several very close run outs, Elm Green found it tricky to score and Toby and Kavin both took wickets. Grant Beard then started his spell of bowling, turning the ball well, and with good variety keeping the batsman guessing with the flight and spin of the ball; this was supported by George Shield, Jonathan Murphy and Harry Phelps. With 2 overs remaining, Elm Green needed 21 runs to win, and was limited to scoring 8 due to the alert fielding. This was a good win for the New Hall boys who have worked hard in some difficult games this season.
