"Cooking is all about people. Food is maybe the only universal thing that really has the power to bring everyone together. No matter what culture, everywhere around the world, people eat together." - Guy Fieri
The aim of the Newhall Cookery department is to give students the confidence to cook their own food and develop a lifelong healthy relationship with this important life skill.
Students in Key stage 3, learn all about the importance of a good balanced diet and also to cook healthy dishes without compromising on flavour. We start with the basics, building up to more complex dishes. All ingredients are supplied by the department and all dishes are prepared from scratch.
A variety of sweet and savoury dishes are included, so that all the different cooking techniques can be learnt. Students, are taught how to use a knife correctly and they will also learn about health, safety and hygiene in the kitchen. In the theoretical lessons, the students cover a range of projects such as learning about different cuisines and how they influence the food we eat today, how chocolate is produced and the popularity of plant based diets. Towards the end of the academic year all students have the opportunity to showcase their skills and creativity when they complete an end of year assessment. Through teaching such life skills, the students have begun a lifelong love and sense of creativity towards food.
In Key stage 5, the students participate in cookery lessons designed to prepare them for independent living. They also have the opportunity to complete an online Food Safety course.
