Fantastic Sailing at NSSA Team Racing Competition
On Saturday 3 March a team from the Preparatory and Senior School entered the NSSA Team Racing Competition. From the outset the New Hall team, consisting of Ben Hutton-Penman (Year 4), Lucy Greenwood (Year 7), Kathryn Hutton-Penman (Year 9) and James Hutton-Penman (Year 11) faced challenges on three fronts; they had never sailed a Firefly previously, nor competed in team racing, and had an average age of 12, the youngest team at the event, compared to other teams consisting of 16 - 17 year olds. Team racing is a combination of sailing skills and tactics to ensure both of your teams’ boats finish higher than your competitors. A total of thirty-three teams were racing, initially divided in to six leagues. New Hall won four of their first five races, and finished 1st in their league, qualifying for the "Alpha" Flight of the top teams on the day. Racing was intense with over eighty races being run in the first stage. The second phase was very competitive and sailing was halted as darkness fell, with the school team unable to finish their complete series of five races. The full results are currently being calculated; however, New Hall can be placed no lower than 6th. Congratulations to the team for this amazing result. Thanks go to Mr Hutton-Penman for his tactic-briefings throughout the day.
