Performing Arts
We believe that the Performing Arts play an important role in developing a child’s communication skills, self-confidence and imagination. Our specialist teachers for Music, Drama and Dance ensure that pupils achieve the highest standards possible in these areas. This is complemented by our outstanding facilities which are second to none – purpose built music rooms, drama studios and a dance studio, as well as our stunning Eaton Theatre which has recently been refurbished with tiered seating.
All classes have weekly music lessons during which they cover key skills including singing, playing percussion instruments, composing and listening and appraising music. From Year 2 until Year 4, all pupils learn the recorder in half classes and there are a number of recorder ensembles available to pupils. There are four choirs across the school: an Infant Choir, a Junior Choir, a Year 5 and 6 Choir and a Chamber Choir. There is also a flourishing school orchestra.
Drama is also a weekly lesson on our timetable and pupils cover a range of skills including improvisation, voice projection and choral speaking. Year 6 pupils perform a spectacular musical show or play in their final year, which is always anticipated with baited breath!
Dance forms a part of the curriculum for our Pre-Reception children and is available to all our pupils as an extra-curricular activity. Currently, pupils can choose from ballet, tap, modern, ballroom and Latin American dancing, break dancing and musical theatre.
There are many performance opportunities for all of these disciplines throughout the year. Some are in-house and others are at prestigious venues such as the Royal Albert Hall. We also enter as many competitions and Festivals as possible, so that pupils have a purpose to their learning and so that they can experience other young people engaging in the performing arts at a high level.
