The OFA would like to invite any Old Fishes back to New Hall for Exhibition Day on Saturday 10 July. There will be a catered picnic at the front of school from 1.00pm, tennis and cricket matches will follow. Members of the community will be present as well as former staff. We hope to see you at this event and welcoming you back to New Hall.  Please contact Mrs Searle if you would like to attend on l.searle@newhallschool.co.uk

New Hall Governors are looking for an Old Fish to become a member of the governing body of the school. Rebecca Fell (New Hall, 1984-1992), former Head Girl and current Chartered Accountant at Deloitte, is a Governor and member of the Finance & General Purposes Committee. It would be good to have a second former student involved in this important work for the school, particularly at this time of change, following the admission of senior boys and expansion to 1,100 students on roll. There is an exciting and ambitious School Development Plan in place.

An educational, legal or financial background would be particularly helpful, as would being Catholic, since constitutionally at least half the governing body must always be Catholic. There is a process for consideration of new Governors, involving a meeting with the Chairman, Professor Mike Alder, and Principal, Mrs Katherine Jeffrey, and a tour of the school. A CV is then forwarded to the Nominations Committee for consideration, prior to recommendation to the full governing body. This is an excellent way to contribute back to your former school, so we would very much like to hear from anyone interested, or if you would like to suggest an Old Fish whom we might wish to approach. The term of office is normally 3 years, with the option of renewal for a further 3 years. We would be grateful if you would contact the PA to Principal & secretary to Governors, Anna Tame, if you are interested: 01245 467 588 or a.tame@newhallschool.co.uk.

Garden Party to support the Canonesses of the Holy Sepulchre in Africa

We have over 200 African sisters who live mainly in DR Congo & Rwanda. They serve the very poorest people & usually live in very remote places amongst their people. They themselves live very poorly. Over the last few months the sisters in the Congo have been in very dangerous situations & some have had to flee from their villages for longer or shorter periods. We constantly try to raise money for them. The ex-Mayor of Chelmsford, Tom Willis, & his wife, have been very supportive of the sisters & again this year are hosting a Garden Party in their beautiful garden in Stock. This is taking place on Sunday 4 July & we would be very happy if Old Fishes would support it. The tickets are £15 each. If you are interested please contact Sister Margaret Mary on 01245604108 or anderson2003@blueyonder.co.uk & we will tell you how to access tickets. Thank you for your support.

You are warmly invited to attend Invisible Presence, Art Exhibition by Sister Mary Stephen of the Canonesses of the Holy Sepulchre.  This is being shown as part of the 50th celebration of Deanery Day on 26 June from 10.30am-4.30pm, at St. John Payne’s School in Chelmsford. The pictures, as well as cards and posters of Sr Mary Stephen’s work will be available to purchase on the day.

The Community warmly invite all Old Fishes and past staff to visit their new house in Colchester on Saturday 4 September at any time between 3.00pm and 6.00pm finishing with an Evening Prayer.

On Friday 14 May, the New Hall School Alumni Old Fishes Association hosted its first “Fishes Formal”.

We were delighted to welcome back over 70 former students and their guests, who were joined by the outgoing Senior Prefect team. The evening began with a champagne reception in The Barn, where there was the opportunity to see hundreds of old photographs and reminisce about school days.

Following this in the North Room, Sr Margaret Mary Horton (former student, housemistress, headmistress and member of the Religious Community) spoke as the Guest of Honour. It was wonderful to hear her talk so movingly about her time at New Hall and also about the wonderful work that the Community are now undertaking in their new homes.

The splendid meal was enjoyed by all and the conversation flowed until late into the evening. It was a wonderful occasion and an event which we are sure will become an annual tradition.

Old Fishes’ Association London Reunion - December 2009

In a new venture for the New Hall Old Fishes’ Association, OFA Coordinator, Libby Searle and Director of Marketing, Annabel Brown (who are both OFs), accompanied by Mrs Hopkinson, travelled up to London for the first official Old Fishes event to be held in the capital city.

Organised via the Old Fishes’ Facebook groups and by other email contacts, London based Old Fishes were invited to drinks at the Pitcher & Piano by Liverpool Street station. It was a wonderful evening, attended by over 20 former students ranging from some who had left just 5 years ago to some who had left in 1979! Many stories were shared and there were promises of more events to follow soon!
