Bulletin Board
Leonora Carrington the surrealist painter and sculptor, has passed away at the age of 94 . Leonora was an Old Fish and studied at New Hall in the 1920s. She went on to be a leading surrealist artist and we were delighted to host a film crew last summer as part of a documentary about her life and work.
A Book of Memories – New Hall School
I have recently started working with the Community to help coordinate some of the projects they are involved in. One key event we are beginning to plan for is the celebration in 2012 of the 370th anniversary of the foundation of the UK Community. It is with much excitement and interest that we are starting work on one idea to mark the occasion that is to publish a book of memories of New Hall School.
It is intended that the book will record memories of New Hall School written by former students, staff and friends of the school. It is not intended that the book be an account of the history of the building or the Community (these already exist) but rather a collection of memories, the thus-far unwritten account of the school, to capture a feel for the place, the people and what really went on there!
We do hope you are interested in contributing to the project and are really looking forward to hearing from you and anyone else you are in contact with. We have not yet set a fixed deadline for any contributions but would urge you to send these to us as soon as possible. We would suggest articles are no more than around 400 words in length and should point out that it may be necessary to edit depending on the level of response.
You can submit your contribution in two ways: either by email to projects@canonesses.co.uk or by post to Pauline McAloone, Canonesses of the Holy Sepulchre, 74 Howe Close, Colchester CO4 3XD. Please feel free to call me on 01206 869 479 if you have any questions.
It would be helpful, when you send us your memories, to have these in electronic form but it is not essential. Please also let me have your maiden and married name (if appropriate) and dates when you were at New Hall (or for those who are not “Old Fishes” the dates of your association with the school). Alternative contact details such as a phone number would also be useful.
We thank you in advance and look forward to hearing from you soon.
Very best regards
Pauline McAloone

Fishes Formal
On Friday 14 May 2010, the New Hall School Alumni Old Fishes Association hosted its first “Fishes Formal”.
We were delighted to welcome back over 70 former students and their guests, who were joined by the outgoing Senior Prefect team. The evening began with a champagne reception in The Barn, where there was the opportunity to see hundreds of old photographs and reminisce about school days.
Following this in the North Room, Sr Margaret Mary Horton (former student, housemistress, headmistress and member of the Religious Community) spoke as the Guest of Honour. It was wonderful to hear her talk so movingly about her time at New Hall and also about the wonderful work that the Community are now undertaking in their new homes.
The splendid meal was enjoyed by all and the conversation flowed until late into the evening. It was a wonderful occasion and an event which we are sure will become an annual tradition.

Old Fishes’ Association London Reunion - December 2009
In a new venture for the New Hall Old Fishes’ Association, OFA Coordinator, Libby Searle and Director of Marketing, Annabel Brown (who are both OFs), accompanied by Mrs Hopkinson, travelled up to London for the first official Old Fishes event to be held in the capital city.
Organised via the Old Fishes’ Facebook groups and by other email contacts, London based Old Fishes were invited to drinks at the Pitcher & Piano by Liverpool Street station. It was a wonderful evening, attended by over 20 former students ranging from some who had left just 5 years ago to some who had left in 1979! Many stories were shared and there were promises of more events to follow soon!
