Year 9 Trip to Ypres

Year 9 Historians and their teachers recently enjoyed a thought-provoking and reflective trip to the WW1 battlefields on the Ypres Salient in Belgium. Led by professional battlefields tour guides, students experienced a preserved trench system, participated in practical sessions on soldier equipment and the use of gas masks and spent time individually exploring both German and Allied cemeteries and the overwhelming loss of life commemorated on the Menin Gate. Whilst light relief was provided with a brief spell of chocolate shopping and in the interactive displays on the Passchendaele Museum, the day ended with a poignant and heart-felt student remembrance of all those who lost their lives in the Great War. Students read a variety of reflections and prayers were said as we laid a wreath in commemoration at Tynecot Cemetery.
