Year 9 Trip to the Battlefields of Ypres

On 12 March, 115 Year 9 students and 12 members of staff left New Hall for the battlefields of Ypres, Belgium.

The day started at the Bayernwald preserved trench, followed by a visit to Bedford House to learn about the work carried out by the Commonwealth War Grave Commission. The group then visited the only German cemetery in the Salient, where they could clearly see the stark contrast between the burial sites and could learn about the German soldiers buried there. The day ended with a visit to the Passchendaele Museum and a remembrance service at Tyne Cot, the resting place of 11,954 soldiers of the Commonwealth Forces. This cemetery, the largest Commonwealth military cemetery in the world, highlighted the sheer scale of the war and its victims.

The students learnt a great deal and, most of all, they learnt about how much others gave for future generations. It seemed fitting, therefore, that on the wreath laid on behalf of New Hall, we simply wrote ‘Thank you.’
