Year 11: President for a Day

On 1 February, Year 11 students had the opportunity to explore the interdependence of the world’s population and the importance of global citizenship by acting as the President of a fictional African country - taking it from independence up to the present day. The afternoon session required students to draw on, and develop, a variety of skills such as problem solving, strategic thinking and team building, in order to make crucial decisions about the economy and direction of the country. They began to understand the dilemmas facing leaders of all countries, but particularly those in the developing world where issues of social justice, equality, wealth, poverty, reconciliation and peace need to be carefully considered. The session also developed many of the themes covered in their GCSE Religious Studies course, where the Bible’s teaching on wealth and poverty are examined in order to understand why Christians are motivated to be active global citizens. The combination of both a syllabus and enrichment afternoon aim to meet New Hall School’s objective to empower students, to challenge them to be the best they can be, in their relationships, their critical thinking, their argumentation and their search for truth.
