100% success rate overall

At New Hall School, Chelmsford, the school’s largest ever A Level cohort are celebrating the school’s best ever A Level results. One third of students achieved 3, 4 or 5 A*/As at A Level.

For the second year running, New Hall is the top performing Catholic co-ed independent school in the UK, based on A Level results 2010.

Principal, Katherine Jeffrey, said: “We are proud of the students and delighted that so many academic records have been broken. 82% of grades were at A*-B, which is up by 4% on last year’s results. New Hall’s record 54% at the top grades A*/A is now double the national average. We are also very pleased with 14% of results at the new A* grade, after early indications that around 7.5% of results nationally were awarded A*. These exceptional results have brought much deserved university success. This year every single one of our New Hall students has achieved or exceeded the grades they needed for competitive places in Veterinary Medicine, Medicine and Law”.

Vice Principal, Rachel Owens, said: “A remarkable 99 A Level modules were awarded a perfect 100% score. These outstanding results of 100% are a testament to the students’ ability and hard work and of course to the expertise and dedication of the teachers. We are proud of all the students’ successes and it is wonderful to see their excitement today after all their hard work”.

New Hall students gained 35 A*s in total; 14% of results were at the new A* grade. Eight students gained 2 or more A*s each, with one of the top performing students being awarded 4A*s and an A. The New Hall Economics & Business Studies Department was celebrating particular success at the new top grade for its 19 entries. In Business Studies, 73% of students achieved A* and 100% achieved A*/A. In Economics, 38% of students achieved A* and 75% achieved A*/A. A number of academic departments at New Hall were celebrating 100% of grades A*-B: Economics & Business Studies; 3 Modern Languages; Critical Thinking; ICT; Government & Politics; and Music.

Once again New Hall announced a 100% success rate overall.

New Hall’s co-educational Sixth Form has doubled in size over the last 3 years and the school opened its new St Thomas More Sixth Form Centre in September in response to the demand for places. This academic year New Hall also opened a £2.5m classroom block, Priory Court, to accommodate the increase to 1,100 students in 2010. New Hall is now the largest Catholic independent boarding and day school in the country.

New Hall was the first girls’ school nationally to expand by establishing a Boys’ Division for 11-16 year olds and a large co-educational Sixth Form. The doors of the former girls’ convent school opened to senior boys in 2006 and two boarding houses have now been successfully established for boys. Principal Katherine Jeffrey said: “From the outset the initiative to take senior boys met with overwhelming support and the school roll reaches 1,100 this September. The move has enhanced the school in so many ways and now these exceptional A Level results are evidence that the academic performance has continued with its year-on-year improvement”.
