New Hall Mock Election 2010

To mark the General Election, Sixth Form students at New Hall have been running as Parliamentary Candidates in a Mock Election.

The parties represented were: Labour, Camille Hamilton Villemur; Conservative, Zachary Adebanjo, Gemma Girvan & Grace Patten; Liberal Democrat, Sam Buddington & Shraiya Thapa; UKIP, Olivia Benson; Green, Martin Jonak & Asha Budahn.

After 2 weeks of campaigning, on Wednesday 5 May, the candidates participated in a Leaders’ Debate, to battle it out for their party. It was an impressive display of debating skill and knowledge of their chosen party’s policies. Topics included defence, immigration, education and the economy.

On Thursday 6 May all students and staff were invited to visit the North Room Polling Station and the results are as follows: Conservative, 322; Green, 71; Labour, 36; Liberal Democrat, 126; UKIP, 70. Congratulations to the winning party. It was an excellent display of democracy in action and I hope it has inspired students to make the most of their vote in the future.
