New Hall’s ‘Diamond’ Model for Academic Success

New Hall was the first girls’ schools nationally to expand by establishing a Boys’ Division for students aged 11-16, as well as a large co-educational Sixth Form. A decision was taken in 2005 to open the doors of the former girls’ convent school to senior boys. Two boys’ boarding houses have now been successfully established, in addition to the two girls’ houses.

New Hall’s rare ‘diamond’ model structure enables boys and girls to be taught separately for five years, until the end of the GCSE courses. Principal, Katherine Jeffrey, said: “From the outset the initiative to educate senior boys and yet to continue the tradition of single-sex teaching met with overwhelming support. The move has enhanced the school in so many ways, with a continuing emphasis on academic excellence.”

New Hall’s co-educational Sixth Form has doubled in size over the last 2 years and the school opened its new St Thomas More Sixth Form Centre in September in response to the demand for places. New Hall also opened a £2.5m 14-classroom block, Priory Court, to accommodate the increase to 1,100 students at the start of the school year.

Last week, New Hall students celebrated record A Level success. New Hall is the top performing independent school in Essex and the top Catholic co-educational boarding & day school in the UK for A Levels 2010. 82% of A Level grades were at A*-B. One third of the Sixth Form achieved 3, 4, or 5 A grades.
