Music for a Summer's Evening

On possibly the hottest day of the year, the culmination of a year of music took place in the Eaton Theatre with Music for a Summer’s Evening.

Opening the concert was the Orchestra with music by Bizet and Liadov. The Orchestra was then joined by Year 13 Music student, Crystle Ying, on piano for an extraordinary performance of the Andante from Mozart’s Piano Concerto in C K467. Following that already impressive performance, Crystle then went on to play the amusing but highly complex Cat and Mouse by Copland, to rapturous applause.

Further performances included the Flute’s Choir rendition of Vivace, written (and performed) by Alice Green (Year 12) for her A Level Music. A string trio delighted with the Traditional Scottish Dance Petronella. The group comprised Year 7 students: Fay Archer on violin; Anne Carruthers on viola and Holly Gadsby on ‘cello.

The Saxtet were on fine form with Midnight in Kinsale from Whitlock’s Celtic Suite, including an impressive solo from Liam Merrigan (Year 10). Two Bridge miniatures by a Piano Trio finished the instrumental contributions to the evening.

A choral sequence by the combined forces of Senior Choir, Chamber Choir and Voces then followed, with a set of bird-themed pieces ranging from Gibbons’ sublime The Silver Swan to the amusing melodrama of Bridge’s The Goslings, which ended the concert with a smile. Refreshments were served on the front lawn after the event.
