On Sunday 13 February, the gentlemen of Earle House and staff visited the Secret Nuclear Bunker in Kelvedon Hatch. The bunker was originally designed to house up to 600 military and civilian personnel, possibly even the Prime Minister, and their collective task was to organise the survival of the population in the aftermath of a nuclear war. As the Cold War died down, the bunker and its ancillary systems were no longer required by the Government; it was decommissioned in 1992 and is now in private ownership. Upon entering the non-descript front door the students found themselves descending into the hillside via a 120m long tunnel, secured with steel blast doors at the far end. The group spent an hour exploring the labyrinth of tunnels whilst listening to a sound track of imminent nuclear attack sirens and public information broadcasts playing in the background. The students had the chance to visit the sick bay, operating theatre, BBC broadcast room, map room and dormitory accommodation. It was a most enjoyable and interesting experience for all involved; many of the boys took the opportunity to dress up in the post apocalyptic fashions available.
