We are delighted to have been presented an antique Essex-made clarinet by Daphne Hilliar, one of New Hall’s Visiting Music Teachers and organist at St Andrew’s Church, Boreham. The boxwood and ivory clarinet in C was made by Ambrose Snazel, a dealer at Culver Street, Colchester circa 1832. The clarinet was bought in 1835 by Mr James Young, who was Sexton of St Andrew’s Church, Boreham for 38 years. The clarinet was bought by Reverend William Smith in 1970, when he was Vicar of St Andrew’s Church. Daphne subsequently became joint trustee of the instrument. Upon Reverend Smith’s death, the instrument was formally given to Daphne by the Vicar of St Andrew’s. Daphne has kindly awarded the clarinet to New Hall where it can be played and seen by many people. The Clarinet is displayed in Walkfares, New Hall’s performing arts centre, where we hope it will provide inspiration to all our musicians.
