Professor Michael Alder FRAgS, DL (Chair of Governors). Born in Oxford in 1947. Married with 3 sons. Educated at St Benedicts School, Ealing and Newcastle University. Several posts in education and Professor of Rural Management. Retired as Principal of Writtle College and currently Executive Director of the Federation of Essex Colleges. Chair of Plant Heritage, a major horticulture charity, and also Chair of Education for the Shuttleworth Trust.

Stewart Adkins BSc(Hons). Born in Cardiff in 1958. Educated at Colchester Royal Grammar School and Leeds University where he obtained a BSc(Hons) in Biochemistry and Genetics. Spent 23 years as a financial analyst with Lehman Brothers, until 2006. Currently Director of two consultancies within the pharmaceutical industry. Married with two children, one of whom was at New Hall School.

Malcolm Earl. Born in London in 1958, one of 6 boys. Married 28 years, with a 12 year old son, and lives in Hadleigh, Suffolk. Educated in Hove Sussex. Joined the Royal Air Force in 1975 and served for 27 years as an aircraft engineer. Worked for Monarch Airlines, Essex County Council and, currently, Ipswich Borough Council in Health & Safety. Governor at Hadleigh High School. External Health & Safety consultant to various educational establishments.

Rebecca Fell ACA MPhil MA (Cantab). Born in 1974 in Braintree, Essex. Graduated from Clare College, Cambridge, with an MA/MPhil in French and Spanish. Chartered Accountant. Director at Deloitte. Joined in 1998, worked for Deloitte France for a couple of years, now back in London. Specialist in International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), including accounting for financial instruments. Old Fish (New Hall 1984-1992; Head Girl, 1991-2).

Katie Gilliland LL.B(Hons). Studied Law at the University of Leeds 2005-2008. Completed a Legal Practice Course 2010. Currently a Legal Assistant within the City of London. Old Fish (New Hall 1998-2005; Deputy Head Girl 2004-2005).

Gráinne Gilmore MA (Cantab). Head of UK residential research at Knight Frank; former journalist at The Times – Deputy Money Editor (2006-2008), Economics Correspondent (2008-2011). Consumer Finance Journalist of the Year, 2008 (Headline Money awards); Santander Media Award winner 2008. Old Fish (New Hall 1986-1993).

Katherine Jeffrey MA(Oxon) PGCE BA(Div) MA(EdMg) NPQH. Principal, New Hall School (since 2001)
. Former teacher, St Mary’s School, Shaftesbury; Head of RE, Woldingham School; Deputy Head, The Marist School, Ascot. Governor, St Mary’s School, Hampstead (2004-8). Institute of Directors’ East of England Businesswoman of the Year Award, 2005. Committee member of the Catholic Independent Schools’ Conference (CISC) (from 2010). Current New Hall parent, with one daughter in the Senior School and 3 daughters in the Preparatory School.

Carmel Jones BEd (Chair of Education & Staffing Committee). Born in 1953. Educated at St Angela’s Ursuline Convent, Forest Gate, and St Mary’s Convent, Romford. Currently headteacher of St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, Upminster, having previously been headteacher of St Joachim’s Custom House. Married with three daughters.

Clare Kershaw LLB (Hons) MCMI. Born in 1972 in Ashford, Middlesex, and educated in Surrey. After graduating from Sussex University with a degree in Law, moved to Essex to join the Essex Training and Enterprise Council (TEC) as an Education Contracts Manager in 1997. Undertook a Postgraduate Diploma in Management Studies at Anglia Ruskin University between 1999-2001 and moved to Essex Learning and Skills Council (LSC) in April 2001 – the successor body to TECs and the Further Education Funding Council. Took leading role on School Sixth Form funding, prior to heading up the implementation of the 14-19 Reform Agenda across Essex. Moved to Partnership Director for North Essex, before joining Essex County Council in January 2008 as Head of 14-19 Improvement; oversaw the inspection of 14-19 across Essex, as part of the Joint Area Review in September 2008. Married for 10 years. Company Secretary for husband’s business.

Sister Teresa Lenahan CRSS. Born in Monmouthshire in 1949, the youngest of three. First job with VSO in Northern Uganda. Joined New Hall in 1974/75 and the Community in 1975. Various teaching and residential appointments within the school. In 1997 based in the mission house in East London. Prioress (from 2002). Moved to Colchester in 2005.

Vincent Marley. DipLA CMLI MIH. Born and educated in Northern Ireland. A Chartered Landscape Architect since 1982, working in a variety of practices. Joined Writtle College in 1992 and currently a principal lecturer and design tutor (landscape architecture, garden design and interior design) within the Writtle School of Design.

Sister Angela Morris CRSS BA(Hons) PGCE BA(Hons). Born in Corbetts Tey, near Upminster in 1935. Old Fish (New Hall School 1944-1953). BA(Hons) in Geography from Queen Mary College, University of London (1956), worked for literary agent until 1958. Joined Community at New Hall in October 1958. PGCE at University of London (1964). BA(Hons) in Theology from University of Kent, Canterbury in 1974. Taught Geography and RE and was a Housemistress at New Hall. Currently involved in voluntary work doing adult faith formation in Scripture, spiritual direction, occasional retreats, days of prayer and ministry training in the church.

Rex Smith FCMA (Chair of Finance & General Purposes Committee). Born in Chelmsford in 1953 and educated at St Cedd’s and Endsleigh House Schools. Represented schools at county level in rugby and swimming. Qualified as an accountant in 1980. Director of Finance at Anglia Ruskin University since 1989, having previously worked at the University of London for nine years. Prior to that various financial management positions were held - 3 years with the NHS and 6 years in industry and commerce including Marconi, Fords and Debenhams. Married to Lorraine, with four children; two girls in their twenties and twin boys currently at New Hall Senior School.

Chris Stevenson FCIS. Born in Birmingham in 1954. Spent 20 years in Zimbabwe and South Africa before returning to the UK in 1987. A chartered secretary who has been employed in finance and company secretarial positions in the insurance and re-insurance sectors in Zimbabwe, South Africa and the UK for 35 years. Married with two children, one of whom was at New Hall School.

Jennifer Tolhurst BA(Hons) DL (Vice Chair of Governors). Born in Northern Ireland 1951, eldest of eight children. Educated at various army schools and at The Convent of the Sacred Heart Tunbridge Wells. Research for the V and A at the Courtauld Institute. Worked for The Times. Married, has three children, daughter was at New Hall. Degree in Fine Art from Colchester School of Art and Design. Chairman of several Essex charities including The Prince’s Youth Business Trust. Director of Property Company. Magistrate 1998-2007. High Sheriff of Essex 2005. Council member National Association of High Sheriffs. Art exhibitions in Essex and London.

Tony Tuckwell, MA (Oxon), MBA (Leeds Metropolitan), DipEd (Oxford). Born 1943. Educated at Headlands Grammar School, Swindon. Graduated from St Peter’s College, Oxford, in Modern History. Married Kathleen 1967. Started teaching in Portsmouth at the Southern Grammar School for Boys; Head of History and Senior Teacher at St John’s College, Southsea, a De La Salle Direct Grant School; Deputy Head at Sale County Grammar School for Boys; and, 1984-99, Headmaster of King Edward VI Grammar School, Chelmsford. 2000-2009 Director of the National Educational Assessment Centre and a consultant on headship appointment and development, working in over 100 schools. Author of A History of King Edward VI Grammar School 1551-2008 and New Hall and its School. Vice-Chairman of Chelmsford Cathedral Festival 2000-2007. Trustee and Governor of Cobham Hall, a Round Square School, since 2003. Member of the Essex Rural Commission 2008-9.

John Westnedge BA(Hons). Born in Sheffield in 1953. Graduated with a degree in Business Studies in 1975. Moved south to work in computing for Tesco in 1981. Now an IT Director for Tesco having, in recent years, managed large IT projects and change programmes in the UK and also in Prague and Tokyo. Married to Caroline, with two daughters, Julia and Honor, both of whom attended New Hall.

Tony Fisher LLB MBA (Clerk to the Governors). Senior Partner and Head of Commercial Department at Fisher Jones Greenwood LLP. Educated at University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, and Nottingham Trent University. Also a Fellow of the Human Rights Centre at the University of Essex and Chairman of the International Human Rights Committee of the Law Society of England and Wales. Locally, a board member at the Colchester Institute and a trustee and company secretary for firstsite, a visual arts trust in Colchester.
