"Chelmsford has been named the happiest place in the country to live"
(The Daily Telegraph, 22 January 2010)
“Chelmsford is the 8th best place to live in the UK.”
(Channel 4, Location, Location, Location, 2007)
New Hall School is situated in Chelmsford, the county town of Essex, just 30 minutes by train from London (trains run every few minutes during peak times), 45 minutes from Cambridge, less than 2 hours from Oxford, 45 minutes from Stansted Airport and 1 hour 30 minutes from Gatwick and Heathrow Airports. In 2007, the Channel 4 programme Location, Location, Location voted Chelmsford as the 8th best place to live in the UK. Chelmsford is a thriving and expanding town, with a booming economy. Whilst the suburbs are peaceful, the town centre boasts many shops, restaurants, theatres and other places of interest.
Chelmsford is officially the UK's hottest spot, with its own microclimate! Summers in Chelmsford have hit the heights of 35.2 degrees celsius. During August, Chelmsford hosts one of Britain's biggest music festivals, the V Festival in Hylands Park.
Chelmsford is steeped in history and was one of the original settlements of Great Britain. Residents of Chelmsford are known as 'Chelmsfordians'. The town has a population of roughly 120,000 and is still growing. It is a modern, well placed town that has a large number of commuters who work in the City of London financial sector. The town is surrounded by many small villages that retain their original charm (examples of these are Danbury, Writtle, Good Easter, High Easter, Roxwell, Great and Little Baddow, Great and Little Waltham).
Chelmsford is also the birthplace of radio. Guglielmo Marconi, the pioneer of radio, built the world's first radio factory in Hall Street, Chelmsford in 1899, with a new factory opening in 1912 in New Street. On the 15 June 1920, the first entertainment radio broadcast was made from Chelmsford, featuring Dame Nellie Melba – a famous opera soprano of the time. Other notable people who were born in Chelmsford are: James Gibson (world swimming champion), Harry Judd (drummer in the band McFly), Penny Lancaster (model), Malcolm O’Kelly (Irish international rugby union player), Tom Payne (actor) and Nigel Spink (former England and Aston Villa football player). Sir Geoff Hurst (1966 England football World Cup final player), although born in Greater Manchester, grew up in Chelmsford.
Chelmsford has enjoyed several new developments lately. One of the major new developments is Beaulieu Park, which is located adjacent to New Hall. A further billion pound investment is planned for the local area. The town is popular with young, affluent commuter families, not least for the excellent quality of the local schools. New Hall is Chelmsford’s only independent senior school and was ranked 1st in Essex and 55th nationally in the contextual value added league table (January 2009). New Hall was also ranked as the top performing co-educational Catholic independent school in the UK for A Levels 2009 and 2010. Chelmsford is also the home of two of the finest grammar schools in the country, Chelmsford County High School for Girls and King Edward VI School for Boys.
New Hall is located in the magnificent grounds of King Henry VIII’s former Tudor palace of Beaulieu, surrounded by fields and beautiful views. To this day, the original coat of arms of King Henry VIII is prominently displayed in the glorious Chapel. The New Hall main building is Grade I listed and its heritage setting includes the historic avenue of trees, which is a Grade II registered park and garden. English Heritage considers New Hall to be in the top 2% of the UK’s most important heritage buildings. In February 2009, Channel 4’s Time Team conducted an archaeological dig at New Hall which was televised twice in April 2009.
In addition to the excellent sporting facilities at New Hall, there are additional sporting facilities at Chelmsford’s Riverside Ice & Leisure Centre, which boasts an ice-rink as well as squash courts. Nearby to Riverside, is Essex County Cricket Ground, where regular matches take place.
New Hall has links with Runningwell Equestrian Centre situated on Rettendon Common in Chelmsford which provides the facilities for student riding lessons. There are also the nearby competition facilities of Towerlands Park, Norton Heath and Wix Equestrian Centres where regular competitions take place.
